THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for July 4, 1992)
Having hit the "big time" in 1991 with ten strong GMs in
attendance, including the two Ks, Kasparov and Karpov, the
1992 edition of the Amsterdam VSB tournament returned to its
previous four player, double round robin format.
The tournament, which began its existence in 1987 as a
tribute to the former Dutch World Champion, Max Euwe, has
evolved into a small, but strong, annual event. It was played
this year during 7-14 May at the site of the sponsor,
Verenigde Spaarbank.
The participants were all familiar names to Dutch chess fans:
the "hometown hero" and current 1993 Candidates' Match
finalist, Jan Timman; his Candidates' Match opponent and last
year's VSB co-winner (with Valery Salov), Nigel Short; one of
the strongest players from the Americas, Seattle GM Yasser
Seirawan; and last but hardly least, the winner of the
highest rated tournament ever held, 1992 Reggio Emilia, and
probably the best player ever produced by the Asian
continent, Viswanathan Anand.
Given such a small, evenly matched field, it's of no great
surprise that a tie for first resulted. Anand and Short, the
highest rated non-Russian players in the world, both finished
at 3.5-2.5. Seirawan and Timman ended with 2.5 out of 6.
In this week's game from Amsterdam, Seirawan catches Short
asleep and wins a piece.
